"The lector is instituted to proclaim the readings from Sacred Scripture, with the exception of the Gospel. He may also announce the intentions for the Universal Prayer and, in the absence of a psalmist, recite the Psalm between the readings." (From the United States Council of Catholic Bishops)
A lector must have a strong, clear voice and be responsible to proclaim God's Word clearly, distinctly, and effectively. He/she must also be responsible to pray, study, and practice their readings in preparation for proclaiming God's Word at Mass. When a lector is not prepared for the reading, the message from the scripture may be lost for the person in the pew.
If you would like to be a lector, you would be required to audition first and then complete lector training.
